Fiberglass Geogrid

Bitumen-coated glass-fibre grid laid between asphalt layers to hold back reflective cracking and extend pavement life.

Overview

Fiberglass geogrid is knitted from glass-fibre rovings and coated with bitumen so that it bonds to the asphalt around it. Glass is very stiff and barely stretches, so the grid picks up tensile stress at the bottom of a new asphalt layer before old cracks and joints can come through. It is laid on a tack coat over a levelling or milled course and under the wearing course, for overlays, road widening, airport pavements and the joint between old and new pavement. It stands up to hot-mix paving temperatures and can be milled out with the asphalt later.

Features

  • High strength in both directions at about 3% elongation
  • Bitumen coating bonds to the asphalt layers
  • Withstands hot-mix paving temperatures
  • Slows reflective cracking from old cracks and joints
  • Can be milled and recycled with the asphalt
  • Two grades, 50 and 100 kN/m
